Glass mosaic memorial stone for Jasmine the cat

August 31, 2009

I finally finished it!  I’m not telling how many years ago I started this mosaic, but it is finally done.  This stone is to mark the place where Jasmine the cat is buried.  The black pieces were purchased.  I have a glass saw and could have cut them, but for the price of the finished pieces it wouldn’t have been worth the wear on the saw blade.  I cut all of the other pieces.  I bought a 10 lb box of brown concrete, and only after opening it to read the directions did I realize that I needed about 15 lbs.  Rather than drive back to Okemos or search around here for a colored mix, I went to the big box home improvement store and bought a color additive to add to regular cement.  It is a little more orange than I would like, but it’s done!

Flower flourish border svg

August 29, 2009

Here is a border with two versions.  The first is a single layer svg that can be cut with either version of SCAL.  The second is a layered svg for use with SCAL2.  The original artwork for this border was from clker.com.  I cleaned it up for cutting and made it into the borders.

Celtic knot corner svg

One of the features of SCAL2 that I like the most is the ability to import layered svg files into SCAL and use the layers as a design element. I don’t remember what brought the idea to mind, but a few days ago I thought how well suited Celtic knots are for a layered svg to do a combination of markers and cutting. I started with a corner I found on clker.com.  I connected pieces and welded others to make a file ready for cutting.  I used that as the marker layer, then I created the mat behind it for cutting.  Cricut markers are 1.5 mm, which is a little large for most images.  I used a mini gel pen to draw the knot, then changed which layer was visible and exchanged the pen for the blade holder/blade to cut out the corner.  I cut it at 2.5 inches, which was still a little small for the leaf details.
