The Font Thing and Windows 7 64 bit

I just switched from XP to Windows 7 64 bit, and discovered that my usual method of opening uninstalled fonts to use in Inkscape doesn’t work with Win7.  When I tried to install The Font Thing I got an error message and it wouldn’t install.  What is a font addict to do?  I found this solution and it works!  Go to The Font Thing website  here and then click on the Download tab.  Download the second link on the download page.  You want the one without the installer since you aren’t going to install the program.  Once you have the files downloaded, unzip them, then for ease of use I pinned the TFT.exe to the taskbar.  Just click on the pinned file to run the program.

When you click on the Browse tab, you might just get a question mark.  If you click on the refresh button it will change to your C drive and you can navigate to where  you have your uninstalled fonts stored.  Then you can preview or temporarily load your uninstalled fonts.  🙂  If you want to use TFT to install fonts, you will have to set it to run as an administrator before you open the program.

My favorite font viewer, I tried dozens of similar software but rarely can preview multiple font in a time.

Sadly the developer maybe too busy or didn’t get any benefit from TFT, no 64bit version so to preview a folder with more than 1000 fonts it’s very slow.

For alternative I’m using font runner, it has 64bit version, 1000 fonts load in 2 seconds.

I am very grateful to you for your assistance in getting the phone thing to work on my Windows 7 laptop. I do a lot of graphic work and I was about to go bonkers without it. Have a very blessed day! 🙂

I used this program years ago and love it, when I got Windows 7 and then 8, I was disappointed I could no longer use it, thank you so so much!

Thank you so much! I just got a new computer which had Windows 7, and I upgraded to Windows 8. I do get an error message when I open the program, but I realized the program still opens and works! I am very excited about this, I couldn’t find another font viewer that I liked as much as TFT!

  11. Francis Vandenplas says:

Sorry, just ignore me too: I did overlook it ;-(. It’s obviously there under the… download tab. I was dumb enough to merely follow the available links, assuming (yes, I know, that makes an ass…) there wouldn’t be anything more under that tab |-((.

      Hi Francis,
Glad you were able to download TFT. Have you looked at NexusFont? I really liked TFT, but navigating to my fonts every time I ran TFT was slightly annoying. I’m really very happy with NexusFont now.

  12. Francis Vandenplas says:

I’d like to use this good old favorite, but on the site (or Blo?) which is still active, I can’t find a way to download that zip file (or any other, by the way.

    Am I overlooking something here?

    Tks for helping out.
    Francis

      Hi Francis,
I edited my post so that it now gives the correct information to find the download, since for some reason I can’t provide a direct link to the download page. Thanks for pointing out my error.

I can’t remember how to enlarge the sample . It’a so tiny I can’t work with it as I used to. Can you help once again?

Thanks so much! I have been using The Font Thing for many years, including at my job as a graphic designer. I could not live without it. I would actually pay for an updated Windows 7 version, but this will work just fine.

I can’t thank you enough for this information! I did the same thing (switched from XP to a 64-bit Windows 7) and I couldn’t get my TFT to work! I was lost without my Font Thing! I have thousands of Fonts and didn’t want to have to install each one! This works perfectly! Thank you so very much!!

  26. Darla says:

Thank you so so so much for this! I have been struggling for a way to make this run under 64 bit for a year!!! 🙂

  27. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

I’ve been using The Font Thing for years now… I just updated to Win7/64 and when I tried to install FT it just died… I was not aware until I read your post that there was a version that didn’t have an installer, and it works great.

You saved me HOURS likely trying to find a suitable replacement, IF one exists.

Thank you for posting this. I just wanted to add a little helpful hint for this. I too am working with Win7 64bit. There is a way to run this application just as described only if you right click on the TFT.exe and go to properties, then click on compatibility there should be a check box at the bottom of this screen that gives you the option to run this program as Adminstrator. This way, you only have to check this once and then you don’t have to go through the process of right clicking and running as Administrator every time. Hope this helps you as much as this post has helped me. Thank you.

  31. Kelly says:

Thank you so much for this little hint. Dont know what I would do without TFT.

  32. Lily says:

    Hi,

This solution works great for displaying the fonts but I was wondering if you had any problems installing fonts. I get an error message when I try to do an install. I actually have to log-in in safe mode in order to do this. This is very inconvenient to say the least =(.

    • imagesbyheatherm says:

      Hi Lily,
If you want to install fonts rather than load them, you will need to right click and set it to run as administrator before opening TWT. Unfortunately you will need to do this every time you want to install fonts. Another free font manager you might consider is NexusFont.

  33. Suzette says:

Thank you so much for this tip! It worked perfectly!

  34. London Calling says:

Thank you! I’ve just upgraded to Win7 64 bit and I’m finding out which programs don’t work and having to find new ways to use them, lol. I really appreciate you sharing this!!

I can’t tell you how grateful I am you posted this. I’ve gone about a month without The Font Thing since I switched to Win 7 and tried several other programs that just weren’t as effective for me. You have made my day. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Thank you very much for this post. I have been usng The Font Thing for years and use it very often. I lost the use of several applications when I went to a 64 bit OS but losing this one really bothered me. I followed your advice it works beautifully!! Thank you again!
